Ask for an individual care plan
When someone cannot change position easily, ask their nurse about skin checks, pressure risk and the support they need. Positioning schedules and specialist equipment should be individualised.
Learn what to look for
Ask the care team to show you how to recognise concerning skin changes and who to contact. Persistent redness or discolouration, broken skin and increasing pain should be assessed.
Keep daily life within reach
Place glasses, a phone, tissues and appropriate drinks where they can be reached comfortably. Keep meals, washing and conversation part of the day, with choices about what feels comfortable.
Protect the bed thoughtfully
Ordinary underpads and waterproof protectors manage moisture; they are not pressure-relieving treatment. Check any extra layers with the team when a specialist mattress or cushion is used. Ask for training before helping with moves or transfers.
